Common Cooking Measurement Conversions You Need to Know

I’m including these common cooking and baking measurements in case you are not familiar with them. It’s pretty hard to figure calorie counts without them.

3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon
16 tablespoons = 1 cup
4 tablespoons = 1/4 cup
2 cups = 1 pint
2 pints = 1 quart
4 quarts = 1 gallon
1 pound of flour = 4 cups
1 pound of granulated sugar = 2 cups
1 pound of butter = 2 cups
1 stick of butter = 1/2 cup
8-oz. can = 1 cup
2 tablespoons = 1 fluid ounce
16 fluid ounces = 1 pint
100 grams = 3.215 ounces

For complex conversions, refer to the one of many cooking conversion calculators online.

Google has a built-in cooking conversion calculator that is really easy to use. Do a search for "half a cup in teaspoons" and you’ll get this result:

Global Gourmet offers another conversion calculator that is helpful. Every food is different. For instance, one pound of brown sugar is 2-1/4 cups, packed, while one pound of confectioners’ sugar is 3-1/2 cups, packed, and as noted above, 1 pound of granulated sugar is 2 cups.
